The first recognized Neanderthal skeleton was found in 1856. The quarry workers and the quarry manager noted that this was probably not animal bones. They then passed it on to a local individual who was involved in natural history society. It was then sent to an anatomist in Bonn, who essentially confirmed that yes, this was human, but unlike any other human skeleton that that had been known.
