The Importance of Holding Big Tech Platforms to Account for the Harm They Cause
Julian Zelizer: The case of Molly Russell was heartbreaking to read about. She died from an act of self harm after being overwhelmed by disturbing content on social media, primarily Instagram and Pinterest. What the coroner found was that she'd been flooded by algorithmicly recommended images which both glamorized and normalized the idea that if you feel bad inside yourself, the normal thing to do is to hurt yourself on the outside too. He says it's a clearest possible example of how these companies do not live up to any of the ideals they talk about.Zelizer: Let's keep Twitter up and running in the name of free speech, even if we have to censor anyone who is
