The Time Constant in Pulmonary Physiology
The time constant in electrical circuits is defined as the time for a charged RC circuit to discharge 63 percent from a full charge to a full discharge. In respiratory physiology, if the respiratory system resistance and compliance are constant, then the time constant would consequently be fixed. We can measure airway resistance in the plethysmograph but these measurements are rarely carried out because they require the placement of an esophageocathor.
