With the capture of Cestos, Herodotus closes his history at the Persian wars. A large number of historians believe that if the Greeks had not successfully defended themselves against the Persians, Greek civilization would have been strangled in its infancy. This view is based on the premise that much of modern western society,. such as philosophy science, personal freedom and democracy are rooted in the legacy of ancient Greece.
