Was failure always inevitable in afghanistan? In other words, was the american occupation always going to lead to an American withdrawal under more or less negative circumstances. Or was there a period in time where western allies really could have turned the tide and created conditions for a sustainable liberal democratic society? Well, i hate to focus on the idea of inevitability, because nothing's really inevitable, except for the laws of physics. So the idea that nothing could have been different over these last 20 years is, i think, problematic.
