I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to feel or what I want to feel. The moments in the story where I feel sure are the moments of clarity. And there's a moment where he's ruminating about what addiction really is. He says that people in the future might know it to be not this thing of chemicals and compounds, but something out on the deck. It is exactly the mystery of watching an addiction from the outside.
