There's actually an element of memory absolutely recall in there as well. Infants exposed to damaging stimuli have a much greater susceptibility when they're older to feel pain than those who haven't had the same experience. There are some rare diseases called congenital insensitivity to pain where genetic mutations block these signaling in these pain triggering neurons and that's a disaster because if you don't feel pain you don't get the warning signals so people injure themselves all the time.
