After reading Katya's book about this whole question of consumer goods in Eastern Europe and in kind of socialist countries. I think wanting the good was an expression of dissent towards your own system. Having these things became like a mark of it was like a political protest. You were a pair of jeans and you were saying to the states, what are you going to do now?
