Before the American Civil War, America had its agricultural backbone based on slave labor. The North gave away millions of acres of land in the American Midwest to anyone who wanted to become a farmer so that they could replace their industry with slavery. This led to cheap U.S. grain flooding the British market and causing farmers to go broke. And then people left their farms and fled to the cities to work in factories.
