In the UK as of 2002, there were like 12,000 documented like uses of it. I didn't go looking for modern statistics. She actually drew on from a book called the snake pit by Mary Jane Ward. Some of the experiences that she writes about in the Bell jar, uh, she wrote about in her novel "The Bell Jar" Other famous or notable folks to have been at McLean hospital include James Taylor and John Nash.
