Repression Is Tied to the Process, Right?
The Oedipus complex doesn't square with Freud's mature understanding of repression, if you like. Before death drive, before 1920, repression is tied to the object. After 1920, what has to be repressed is the object becomes indifferent when you think about the drive. You have to repress your own self-destructiveness after 1920. And that's why it's really hard to cling to a notion of edifice complex as the key to psychoanalysis.
