The Value of Populism in Understanding Trump
I think populism is quite clearly an important aspect of Trump's campaigns and especially his 2016 campaign in the sense that he very explicitly and repeatedly vilified political elites. But I do think that actually would distinguished him much more from other American political candidates was his quite unabashed ethnic nationalism, exclusionary nationalism,. The vilification of immigrants, of Muslims, of domestic minorities and sort of a conflation of all of these minorities with crime, with terrorism. So basically in a nutshell that is a combination of populism of ethno-nationalism and of authoritarianism. And what Trump's innovation was in the American context is really bringing these three elements together into a coherent electoral package which appealed to to his voters
