In the late 1920s, he joined the Columbia Graphephone Company. His first task was to create an electronic recording system. EMI didn't have their own electronic recording system and had to use one created by RCA in the U.S. That meant that they had to pay royalties on every single vinyl record they made. To get around this, they reached out to Alan for a job at EMI Records. And he went into the interview and said, yes, I couldn't do it. But I don't think you'll be able to afford my salary.
