The Discovery of America
In America, Columbus mattered more as a mythological symbol than he did as a historical figure. This vision of the American Columbus was perhaps best articulated in a statue that stood beside the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., from 1844 to 1958. Not only did the Discovery of America sculpture explicitly propagate the myth that Columbus was the first person to prove that the world was round, but it also sent a very clear message about how European settlers of that era felt about America's first nations.
