The Panic of 1938
In 1938, movie exhibitors branded some of the biggest stars of the decade as box office poison. The U.S. Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against eight Hollywood studios that would eventually result in the forced ending of vertical integration. A million-dollar PR campaign encompassing the releases of 94 different films over a four-month period was designed to lure lapsed and virgin moviegoers to theaters.
