I really think that something like consciousness is required when you say reasoning, you're separating that from consciousness. I think AI will need to be able to suffer in order to become super intelligent. The other part of that is not just the suffering, but the conscious,. In the sense that it has a self-awareness about its presence in the world and understand that it's finite and terrified of that finiteness.
