Athelbert and the Law Code
A prior of a monastery in rome, augustine, had arriv ved with forty to 50 learned men and converted athelbert. Ethelbert wasn't a king for nothing - he could see the advantages of being able to write stuff down. The church had a long and honourable history, or dishonourable history, of using the power of writing to their own advantage. It's an exciting thought, the rules of society, which up to now had simply been custom and practice, available for everyone to see. Otherwise it would be utterly useless and so much toilet paper.
