The book was originally called The Mice and Men. "I literally did not mention him at all 10 years ago named Carson," the author says of a character he didn't know much about before this read. Crooks is the only black character in the book that we meet. He has suffered many injuries in his life, including being beaten up by everyone on the farm until George showed up.
