There are some wonderful images. There's an image in poem five where he says, I stood with my shield over both sides, allowing neither side an unjust victory. And there he's picturing himself as this heroic, hoplite warrior in the first line of battle. But paradoxically, he's not protecting just one side. The sense that he's the unique solo bulwark of civil peace really pervades the poetry.
