The Law of Atonement
The doctrine came into play in 1849 when a young man named Ira West was brought in front of a high council for fraud. Brigham Young publicly hinted that maybe someone would be doing Ira a favor if they murdered him before he had a chance to continue his sinful ways. It is also possible that it was the Mormon people who killed Ira West rather than the establishment, evoking blood atonement.
