When Stevie Smith was five she was diagnosed with TB, probably got it from drinking on pasteurized milk. She was sent away to a salatorium in Kent to be by the sea for most of three years. So she spends a very lonely period in her early childhood there. And then they come back to Palmer's Green, and then what? Right. Much later in life she wrote a poem which evokes this place as being somewhere that keeps fear out,. Although he knocked a place of protection, she also felt it was a house of warmth and love.
