The Forbidden City and Its Museums
In the 1930s, when Japan invaded China and began gobbling up Chinese territory, curators inside the Forbidden City decided that they had to evacuate this art. They hid it in villages and caves and temples in the far west of the country. "It really is like a herculean story," says author Adam Gershwin.
