The Effects of Acid on Rust
acid reacts with rust and just dissolves it, turns it into a salt plus water. So I think sometimes people think that it reverses the rust reaction, but it doesn't. It just removes the rust. The iron that had rusted away, you're basically just rinsing that off by making it into a new compound and washing it away. With vinegar, which is a very, very dilute acid, it does that. But if you were to take the super concentrated form of the acid and pour it on your rusty thing, it would actually also react with the metal and dissolve your metal away.
