Why do we read the Book of Ruth on the second day of Shavuot? No one is sure. The medieval Maksor Vitri records several opinions. One popular explanation says that the book of Ruth is read as an homage to King David on the occasion of his birthday. Is there any ancient evidence pointing in that direction?
