Was There Ransomware Before Cryptocurrency?

Was there ransomware before cryptocurrency? I don't remember if it was. Yeah, there was one major incident where someone had created malware. It would affect your machine and then you would have to send a check over to the person through snail mail. When it comes to scale, not so much. There were definitely people that had a ton of power back in those days.
