A hierarchy is advantageous to the collective in so far as those that are most competent inhabit the highest echalons of that hierarchy. If you're not doing yn good job at the top, there needs to be downward mobility. And if you have a large group of people who are outside the current hierarchy, but rising really fast, and the current hierarchy doesn't accommodate them, it's not long for this world or you're goig to have serious conflict oet.
