The Relationship Between Kanute and Hardecnut
Two competing dynasties could plausibly claim to be the legitimate rulers of england. Both had living male heirs who were one another's half brothers. All sons, edward and alfred on the anglo saxon side, and hardecnut on the north side, had all been largely raised by their mother, emma of normandy. So this was probably the main advantage, of course, for emma,. that if she created this alliance by marriage to kanute and made edwards and alfred knut's stepsons, that would help to protect them.
