Art Is a Non-Utilitarian Value
The Buddha was definitely against superstitious superstitions and going from refuge to shrines. He said they won't help you much shrines. So what was he pointing to in asking the Virginians to honour their shrines? Well I think what he was pointing to was that we need a higher value that is non-utilitarian. Art itself offers us a chance to set back and get some perspective. And I think what's very dangerous in a government that's applying austerity or ideology is that art can be the first thing to go because it's non-ut utilitarian.
