Is There a Generational Shift in Computer Science?

Early AI researchers wondered what will it take for a computer to be able to do everything that a human can. Do they need to be conscious? From the outside, if all they're doing is the same input output behavior, who cares whether they're conscious or not? I mean, now you go to school for computer science and you can get a very high paying job at Google or Facebook. So it's a different type of person has started going into the field.
