The Assyrians were obsessed with omens, signs of bad fortune or divine disfavor. They built enormous temples and observatories for the watching of the heavens to be vigilant for omens or messages. The palace had a very extensive, complicated, internal and external spy network. There was perpetual fear of internal violence and treason and disloyalty within the empire or even within the imperial court itself.
