The End of the First World War
To understand where all these different viewpoints started, one has to look at the end of the First World War. My own view is that it's easy to underestimate how deeply ordinary German people felt about the humiliation of their country after the WWI. And so sitting there in Bavaria, you thought that it was a weak government and you longed for strong government. The villagers wanted somebody to lead Germany back. Many of them, that's exactly what Hitler seemed to promise them. They were pleased when he finally came to power.
