What Does Plasma Look Like?

In an ordinary gas, atoms don't react in a strong way to the electric field. But if I've already freed the electrons by heating the system up, they are now negatively charged and can be used for electricity. And so therefore, you can get plasmas of different colors by the positive ions that are left having electrons being excited within them. So when you look at the northern lights, you're looking at a plasma.
