The Nature of Judgment Changes in a Collective Situation
In ezekiel chapter 18, in verses three and four, the lord sternly rebukes them for using this proverb. He explicitly commands them not to use it any more. The son's soul is not merely at the mercy of his father's actions, but it belongs to god. In a situation of collective judgment, for instance, they may escape with their lives, but lose everything else.
