Ennis is dramatized at a young age and learned very, very openly how much danger he is in if he lives that life. Annis has to assimilate into the community. He has to be able to do it in the hyper masculine ways that he knows how,. And the only way he can blend into that world is to be this nothing, this emotional conversational, nothing that he's learned.
