As a foreign correspondent, not understanding is a bit of a gift, really. And things that local people would not occur to them as being kind of odd or interesting or engaging will be to you. But as time goes on, my wife is American, and I had two kids there. You become invested. And it stops being anthropology. It starts, you've got skin in the game.
