The Importance of Petrification in Mining

There is this little thread in the conspiracy world that gets way, way out there. What does it really mean for something to be petrified? I've looked at the petrified forest and they just kind of say fossilized. How does this factor into mining? Another thing I've been touching on in every single one of these state episodes is the idea that the world was tropical not so long ago.
