The site is aligned on this special solstice axis. There's some debate amongst archaeologists as to whether it was the summer solstice that was more important or the mid-winter solstice. The sun would set between the two tallest stones at the head of the horseshoe of sartons. This is the earthwork enclosure that goes all the way around the outside of the stone circle. We can get a really good impression of how quite spectacular this would have appeared, especially if you're a prehistoric person who has never seen a monument like this before in your life.
