The Feminine Uncle Tom of the 1930s
Hurston was very ahead of her time in calling attention to that theme of the domestic abuse. She emphasizes the structure of authority that would have to be changed in families where women were treated as equals. For people who do want to demonize Hurston and think of her as just simply again, this kind of feminine uncle Tom from the 1930s you really cannot place her in that kind of box. Her primary interest is in realistic portrayals rather than the struggle of equal rights for people of color.
