The Unsettled Question of Consciousness
There's no agreed upon explanation as to why consciousness evolved, like no consensus on the evolutionary or adaptive value of subjective experience. I think there's also this interesting impulse to want consciousness to be something more than just a Darwinian adaptation. And that last bit, that last phrasing, that evolution might be just a cross section of a more complex and larger process. That idea is not just kind of pre theoretic speculation, there's really interesting work coming out in theoretical biology and physics and philosophy that's trying to make a similar case.
