CHAPTER

The Early Christian Communities in the Balkans

After Jesus' ministry, the apostles legendarily start to spread out And so these aren't Jewish tribes anymore But this is where I think it's Thomas, right, doubting Thomas puts his fingers in the wounds. He goes to India, the story is, and starts evangelizing there And so you end up with, you know, what, 1500 years later, 1600 years later When you get European contact, you get guys just saying, hey, what are you talking about? We then hear the whole time.

I was just saying,
Speaker 2
you know, the lost tribe There are people who say they're part of the lost tribes If you're walking around the streets in New York City, you might run into some of them
Speaker 1
Sure, I mean, there are And you see two ways of, again, there One is the destruction of the kingdom But then you also have, after Jesus' ministry You have the apostles legendarily start to spread out And so these aren't Jewish tribes anymore But this is where I think it's Thomas, right, doubting Thomas puts his fingers in the wounds I think he goes to India, the story is, and starts evangelizing there And so you end up with, you know, what, 1500 years later, 1600 years later When you get European contact, you get guys just saying, hey, what are you talking about? We then hear the whole time
Speaker 2
Yeah, but early Christian communities there and there was also a Jewish diaspora in India I think they were called the maverich or something like that It
Speaker 1
certainly could be, you have the furthest east spread of Christianity in the classical era In antiquity, is maps on pretty well to the furthest east spread of the Indo-European languages I don't know much about it, but that's Tukkarian, kind of in what's now Kazakhstan, some of the stands, Western China Both at that's the furthest east, Indo-European language But then also you get, kind of, from our Western perspective, these very odd semi-heretical offshoots of Christianity Start spreading out there very early on, in other words, long before Constantine and long before the Roman Empire becomes Christianized You have it spreading way into Central Asia and even fringes of Eastern Asia
Speaker 3
Then that's really based of cruises to use the Roman designation It's very
Speaker 1
tough to, I mean, it sort of shows It's hard to imagine there being any eventual stable diplomatic solution when people cannot even agree what Tukkarian is The area, but this comes into something I've heard you guys mention a lot when you start talking about the Balkans especially The problem with Balkan history, each of the peoples of the Balkans have had their heyday at one century or another in the middle ages And their early modern period, and so every current Balkan country has a map of greater Albania, right, on their wall Which is almost the whole thing And so if you superimpose them all on each other, you know, you've got a real big problem here Obviously you have a similar thing, I guess the most neutral term, maybe we call it the Levant, right, is for this sort of coastal part of what we call the Middle East I mean, you know, neutral terminology, real difficult to come at here
Speaker 2
That's what ISIS called, it's like, you know, it's good enough for
Speaker 1
them, it's good enough for us Have you been to Jerusalem?
