The Importance of Family in Judaism

If God is our parent, then we are all brothers and sisters. We are related by bonds that go to the very heart of who we are. This concept of Jews as an extended family is powerfully expressed in Maimonides' laws of charity. Why is Judaism built on this model of the family? Partly to tell us that God didn't choose an elite of the righteous or a sect of the like-minded. The family is the most powerful vehicle of continuity.
