"Narrow Valley," by R.A. Lafferty, is both a science fiction story and a western story. In it, a white family attempts to homestead on acreage originally given in a U.S. government land allotment. The writer acknowledges borrowing the language of its acknowledgement of its occupation of Stolen Tongva Land from an online collective of spirit healers. "The feeling that the Reagan era was coming is a migraine program," says John Sutter.
