The 12 apostles became the core leaders of the Jesus movement after his death and resurrection. Matthew, it doesn't say he leaps over the table. Something's going on inside of him where he's participating in the extortion of his own Jewish people. He actually becomes a part of the closest circle of people around Jesus.
