The Amorites set the religious and cultural tone for society from about the time of 2000 BC, which was roughly the time of Abraham. The Amorites did not see a separation between the realm of the living and the afterlife. It's kind of an Eastern concept to us now. But that was the worldview of the people who lived in and around the ancient Israelites.
