Engineers dropped the bomb at 5.30am on July 16, 1945. The engineers witnessed a flash of light, followed by a heatwave and a massive mushroom cloud. Oppenheimer's scientists had calculated the extreme unlikelihood of global destruction but couldn't be certain of the outcome. Some feared that the explosion would ignite the atmosphere and render the Earth itself uninhabitable.
