The Treaty of 16 Forty Six
The treaty of 16 forty six marks the colonists first real effort to devise a programme for governing indian relations. The policy contained three objectives: erecting a defensive pyrimeter on the frontier, eliminating as many contacts between the two peoples as possible and subjugating all those indians who lived within or near english settlements. Part of the treaty expresses the virginian claim to region. They had just forced the wayanokes from and forbade any of the powatan from residing there. A string of forts had been constructed in 16 forty five. After 16 forty six, more were added. And these became colony's main defence against future attacks.
