The History of Pigs

Pigs have always carried a stigma of being unclean, due in large part to the way the animals are interpreted through religion. In some places, like ancient Rome, where pigs subsisted on natural foods like grain and nuts, their consumption was not prohibited by religious texts nor frowned upon by moralists. Regardless of the pig's bad rep, those who could not afford other kinds of clean meat have long been consuming both domesticated and feral hogs which were often plentiful and free.
