Lidar can penetrate vegetation, meaning you can see what's hidden underneath the tree canopy. Archaeologists can fly lidar systems over ancient sites and use the results to build three d representation of the surface below. Lidar is a lazer range finding device that penetrates the canopy. So when you take an aerial photo, you only see the tops of trees. These lazers actually penetrate, bounce back to the cense, so we can start to develop a threedy model from these.
