Ashoka's Inscriptions Tell Us That He Made 84 Thousand Stupas
Ashoka's pillar edicts reveal a man totally different from the stale nationalist depictions of him as some kind of benevolent autocrat. Ashoka seems to have dug up wherever the original remains of the buddha were interred and reinterred them under new stupas, in the process establishing them as major puds pilgrimage centers. He made the village of lumini free of taxes, paying only an eighth share of the produce. And his other inscriptions tell us establish highways, inns and orchards along the way to make it easy for pilgrims to get there and consume his propaganda,. Along with gaining an t religious merit.
