Thunder lightning, three witches dancing. Why did you think he began like that? I think it's become more pantomimic since then. The three witches have become a cliche. They weren't quite a cliche then. And in fact, i think it begins in a really arresting way. If you think about an era before amplified sound, the sound of thunder made by a metal sheet in the theatre probably made you jump out of your skin. This is not the two gentlemen sort of chatting that shakespeare's plays often begin with. It brings brings the adrenelin forward. That's something that the play capitalizes on and never letslets go.
